Residents urged to take precautions after confirmed rabies case in local cat |
OSCEOLA COUNTY, Fla. — The Florida Department of Health in Osceola County has issued a rabies alert following the confirmation of rabies in a cat euthanized on January 10, 2026, near Carolina Avenue in St. Cloud.
This alert underscores the presence of rabies in the local wildlife population.
The rabies alert will remain in effect for 60 days, encompassing the following boundaries:
North: Lakeshore Boulevard from the 1500 block east
South: Fertic Road
East: Old Hickory Tree Road
West: Wisconsin Avenue
Residents and visitors are advised to take the following precautions to prevent rabies exposure:
Vaccinate Pets and Livestock: Ensure all pets and livestock are immunized according to your veterinarian’s recommendations.
Supervise Animals: Keep pets on a leash and under direct supervision; secure livestock on your property.
Avoid Wild Animals: Steer clear of contact with wild or stray animals, especially raccoons, bats, foxes, skunks, otters, bobcats, and coyotes.
Do Not Feed Wildlife: Refrain from feeding wild animals or leaving food sources like open garbage cans accessible.
Seek Medical Attention: If bitten or scratched by an animal, seek medical care immediately and report the incident to DOH-Osceola at 407-742-8606.
Contact Animal Services: For stray animal removal, contact Osceola Animal Services at 407-742-8000.
Rabies is a fatal disease affecting the nervous system of humans and warm-blooded animals.
