New Pedestrian Hybrid Beacon Enhances Safety on North Orange Blossom Trail
The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) has activated a new Pedestrian Hybrid Beacon (PHB) on North Orange Blossom Trail, just north of Victory Charter School in Kissimmee. This initiative aims to improve pedestrian safety in the area. PHBs are designed to assist pedestrians in crossing busy roadways by increasing driver awareness. When a pedestrian presses the call button, the beacon initiates a sequence: flashing yellow to alert drivers, solid yellow to prepare them to stop, and solid red to require a complete stop, allowing pedestrians to cross safely. The beacon then flashes red, indicating that drivers may proceed if the crosswalk is clear. According to the U.S. Department of Transportation, PHBs can reduce pedestrian crashes by 55%. This installation is part of FDOT's ongoing efforts to enhance pedestrian safety in high-traffic areas.
